STREAM 14: SOCIAL INNOVATION AND COMPLEXITY

Katharine Mcgowan (Mount Royal University), Sean Geobey (University of Waterloo)

Description

The past two years have revealed what many complexity scholars have known for decades; decision-making, governance, and leadership under complex conditions requires people to be adaptive, learning-oriented, open to emergence, capable of integrating multiple perspectives, and tolerant of failure.  However, many of our traditional places and spaces for leadership and governance are unable to grapple with complexity resulting in multiple crises of legitimacy.  The current crisis will not be the last: it is time to center complexity in our conversations about governance.

For ISIRC 2022, we welcome papers that explore the interplay between complexity and governance in a wide variety of realms, questions and approaches.  This includes complexity and the public sector; complexity in social enterprise; complexity and social moments; complexity and reconciliation efforts.  We invite conceptual papers, critical literature reviews, and case studies that can help us explore real world complexity, what has been done well and where learning can help us build resilient futures.  We welcome especially those who are exploring complexity in their research for the first time as the field grows in response to the revelations from COVID-19, climate change, and Just Transitions amongst other overlapping crises and opportunities.
